7 Habits for a More Sustainable Home

On World Energy Saving Day, the Silestone Institute invites us to reflect on the energy waste that often goes unnoticed in our homes and shows how, by adopting simple sustainable habits, we can change our routines and optimize the energy consumption of our homes.

Beyond traditional conservation tips like turning off lights or choosing energy-efficient appliances, the Silestone Institute shares eight innovative practices that not only contribute to the well-being of the planet, but also modernize and enrich our homes.

  1. Schedule Energy-Free Days at Home: Once a week, unplug all non-essential devices and appliances, and implement more eco-efficient and sustainable alternatives. This includes TV’s, computers, game consoles, heat, and even hand-washing kitchen utensils to reduce energy consumption while encouraging more social and outdoor activities.
  2. Cook Without Heat One Day a Week: Incorporate raw recipes into your diet at least one day a week. Enjoy fresh salads, tartars, or dishes made with fresh vegetables and fruits. By eliminating appliances like the oven or stove, you’ll not only reduce your energy consumption but also promote a healthier and more sustainable diet.
  3. Practice Efficient Cooking: Reduce energy use in the kitchen by practicing efficient cooking techniques. Cook multiple dishes at the same time to take advantage of residual heat from the burners or run the dishwasher only when it’s full. These small habits will not only help you reduce your energy costs but will also encourage you to be more mindful and plan your meals and cleaning routines more effectively.
  4. Discover Home Automation: Use technology to automate and schedule the use of electronic devices in your home. Set aside a day each month to regulate and check the energy use of your appliances. Configure timers to automatically turn off appliances during times when they’re not needed, such as when you’re sleeping or away from home.
  5. Make Laundry More Efficient: Establish a weekly laundry routine and schedule your washes to completely fill the washing machine, thereby minimizing water waste. Set aside items that require special care and make cold washing as the standard; modern washing machines can clean effectively without the need for hot water.
  6. Repair and Reuse: Set aside a day each month to repair small appliances, use old clothes for cleaning, or redesign old furniture to give it a new life. Reusing and repairing what you no longer use not only prevents overconsumption but also allows you to create a home that reflects your personal style.
  7. Plan a Meal Calendar: Create a meal calendar that includes recipes and seasonal items to effectively organize your shopping. Not only will this reduce impulse purchases and food waste, but it will also allow you to tailor your ingredients to what you really need for your recipes.
